Hybrids. As you may know, Toyota sells its Prius in China. Lots of them. In Japan, they sell something like 5 models of Prius. And they sell lots of them there as well.

In the US, we now have 3 models of Prius. The original, which has been a best seller since its launch now has two new siblings.

The new Prius “V” which is sort of a station wagon / SUV with lots of features not found on the original sedan.

And a new, plug in Prius – the ultimate for those who want an EV without sacrificing any gizmos.

These 3 Prius models are representative of what makes Toyota so successful; they continue todevelop product after product in virtually every segment where they want to compete. Then they go to work on diversifying the product within the model line – like Prius.

I realize of course, that there are thousands of hours of engineering and design, testing and certification, but Toyota’s ability to produce such a flow of product is amazing.

Being around cars, talking about cars, and looking at all of these new cars eventually take its toll. I succumbed to the force that drew me in like a nail to a magnet.Last fall I decided that I had to buy a new car to add to mycollection. I didn’t needa new car;I wanted a new car.

So I called a friend who is a Toyota dealer in Los Angeles and arranged to look at some cars. A couple of hours later I was looking at a 2012 Toyota Prius V, a silver-model 5, with a panoramic roof. Nice car. When we returned to the dealership after the test ride, the manager and I sorted out a deal. The car was delivered to my house the next day.

I’m a “car guy”; I have to share an interesting fact with my readers: I can’t drive. I haven’t driven for 18 months due to health reasons and won’t be able to drive again. I won’t get to drive this new car; its handling, power and other dynamic characteristics will be forever mysterious to me. It sits in my garage.

One of the coolest things about this new Prius “V” is its Hybrid Drive and its ability to provide 44 MPG – that’s 44 miles per gallon in the city. 5.35L/100KM!

It’s also the Prius’ and other Hybrid and Plug-In’s near Zero exhaust emission output that is a compelling factor for purchase consideration. It really makes me wonder why Beijing isn’t saying “Hey, if you want to buy a car in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Henan, Hangzhou, etc. and get it registered anytime soon, you might consider a Hybrid because they produce the least CO, NOX, and noise. And Plug-In EVs are also a great option as well. With the National concern that EV’s aren’t moving as well as they should or worse, must, something’s got to change or the air pollution in China will overwhelm the oxygen supply.
